Golf playboy John Daly begged to join LIV Tour & brands Saudi prince ‘great guy’

John Daly has revealed he “begged” Greg Norman to include him in the controversial LIV Golf Series while branding Saudi Arabia’s Prince Mohammed Bin Salman a “great guy”.

The cult hero, 56, is a two-time major champion, having won the PGA Championship in 1991 and the 1995 Open at St Andrews. Yet Daly has not made the cut at a major since 2012 while struggling with drink, gambling and weight issues.

That means he has spent most of his time playing on the PGA Tour Champions, which is aimed at players over the age of 50 who are not part of the PGA Tour. But that has not stopped the American from testing his luck by asking LIV CEO and commissioner Norman for a place on the Saudi-backed circuit.

He told Piers Morgan Uncensored as per The Telegraph: “I begged Greg Norman to let me be on the LIV tour.

“I play two to three pro-ams every week on the Champions tour and we don't play for a lot of money so I almost feel like: 'OK, I'm not getting a lot out of this. What are we doing?’

“Look, I'd rather play with amateurs than the pros sometimes but we've got to get compensated for that. The LIV tour is giving players that. They play pro-ams, it's a big party, they play for a lot of money, which these guys that are on that tour, deserve that money. And I think there's a lot of other guys that deserve that money. Especially this old man.”

Daly went on to slam concerns over Saudi Arabia’s alleged attempts at sports-washing in light of their suspect human rights record. He slammed LIV critics for their hypocrisy while gushing over the Saudi crown prince, who was accused of approving the killing of a journalist by the CIA in 2018.

He said: “It’s unbelievable. Politics is so stupid about this. I could talk about Nike, I could talk about other companies. Little eight-year-olds build shoes for Nike. Okay.

“We don’t want to get into that, do you? You want to talk about labor laws. We’re talking about golf, guys playing golf, it’s an international sport.

“The Prince of Saudi Arabia is a great guy and he's given so much money to golfers that deserve it. Well, there are some that aren't deserving because I should be on that tour.”
