Henrik Stenson has been stripped of his Europe Ryder Cup captaincy after joining the rebel Saudi-Arabian funded LIV Tour.

The Swede reportedly agreed a signing-on fee of £40million in a stunning U-turn which could send shockwaves through the world of golf.

The 46-year-old is said to have held talks with DP World Tour chiefs after the conclusion of the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews. He will be unveiled as part of the LIV Golf Series roster and join the field for next week’s third £20m LIV event in New Jersey.

Stenson's move is a seismic one in that the former world No.2's decision could pave the way for other players to do the same. Now ranked down in 171st and without a title in nearly three years, his best days are clearly behind him.

Yet his decision may convince others to join the Greg Norman-fronted venture no matter how far down they are in the rankings.

LIV had named 45 of a 48-man field on Tuesday with no surprises. But they had left out Stenson, along with two other names.
