Skeletal remains of missing ex-MMA fighter found with family left heartbroken

A former mixed martial arts fighter’s skeletal remains have been found in Missouri.

David Koenig was reported missing by his family back in March 2020 after last being seen at the Peach Tree Hotel in Branson, Missouri, on February 8.

That was until a man searching for deer antlers finally located the 6’6 ex-amateur fighter’s remains near Fall Creek Road, Branson, nearly two years later on December 22.

The remains were identified by forensics on Monday as Koenig, who had been 25 at the time of his disappearance, while foul play and trauma were ruled out by a forensic pathologist in the build up to his death.

Assistant Chief Jeff Matthews of Branson Police said: “Our department and the amazing group of volunteers never stopped in our efforts to find Mr. Koenig.

“While this is not the ending we hoped for, we offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Koenig.”

Koenig’s mother, Tracy, stated that the family was heartbroken with the news.

Speaking to KOLR, she said: “My son was an incredible person. Literally larger than life. Not just physically, but in everything about him.

“He was a big, beautiful, gentle giant with a heart of gold.

“We appreciate them giving us some time and space at this time to heal quietly as a family."

Koenig had been staying at the hotel for a few nights where he sent text messages asking friends to help him as he thought he was in danger shortly before his sudden disappearance.

His mother has now dispelled rumours on a Facebook group titled ‘Mystery of the Missing Fighter’, where people have suggested her son was murdered.

She wrote: “Nobody killed Dave. Nobody! He left the Peachtree [Inn] on foot and never made it home.

“Why he was in distress and why he walked through the deep woods we most likely will never know. But he is GONE.

“So PLEASE……NO MORE RUMOURS……NO CONSIPIRACY THEORIES……NO BLAMING BRANSON PD.”
