Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has told Tyson Fury he should forget about a trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder and take on Anthony Joshua in a unification fight this summer instead.
The Gypsy King claimed the WBC belt in dominant fashion, comprehensively out-boxing a bloodied and bruised Wilder before the American’s corner threw in the towel in the seventh round.
While the loser has the option to trigger a rematch in the next 30 days, Wilder may decline to do so given how dominant Fury was on Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Instead, Hearn wants Fury to take on Joshua – who holds the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO titles – in a heavyweight contest for the ages and has even suggested it could happen this year.
‘Wow unbelievable from Fury! Fair play and well done Sugar Hill and Andy Lee on a first-class game plan,’ Hearn tweeted on Sunday morning.
‘No need for a third [fight with Wilder] let’s go straight to it [with Joshua] in the summer!’
Replying to a fan who suggested Hearn wouldn’t let Joshua anywhere near Fury, he said: ‘Of course I am! And AJ wants it bad… this fight is gonna and has to happen this year!’
Hearn also uploaded an image to Instagram of Joshua and Fury facing off in the ring, writing alongside it: ‘Brilliant performance from Fury.
‘All the belts are in the UK, no-one wants Fury v Wilder 3 let’s go straight to AJ v Fury #undisputed’
Wilder has already intimated he will seek a rematch, saying in the ring afterwards: ‘Even the greatest have lost and came back, that is just part of it. You just take it for what it is. I can make no excuses tonight. I had a lot of complications. But we’ll come back stronger next time around.’
