Nate Diaz tipped to fight Jake Paul instead of extending UFC contract

Nate Diaz could fight Jake Paul instead of renewing his UFC contract, according to legendary fighter Michael Bisping.

Former middleweight champion Bisping has backed Diaz to take a massive money fight with YouTube star Paul after he fights out the final bout of his deal with the promotion, likely against Vicente Luque or Tony Ferguson.

Diaz is one of the biggest stars in all of MMA, but has consistently had a strained relationship with the sport's top promotion, and their boss Dana White.

Prior to his career-making win over Conor McGregor in 2016, White had claimed that Diaz wasn't a "needle-mover" in the fight game, which he has since gone back on after his massive drawing fights with the Irishman and Jorge Masvidal.

Diaz lost three of his last four outings in the promotion, and has only fought three times since the summer of 2016, but is still a massive fan favourite, and is reportedly working on forming a promotional stable with his brother Nick.

The promotion would likely cover MMA and boxing, which is the sport in which his fight with Paul would take place.

"The UFC are very smart and, generally, someone like Nate Diaz isn't just going to get to fight out of his contract," Bisping said in a video for his YouTube channel.

"This is just the way they operate. A lot of promotions, they all do it. You negotiate before the final fight of the contract so who knows?"

Paul and White have a notoriously poor relationship, and the likelihood of them ever doing a cross-promotion is close to non-existent.

"I don't think Dana would ever do a joint promotion with Jake Paul," Bisping added. "But I would love to see Nate Diaz vs. Jake Paul.

"I think that would be a tremendous fight but it's not a case of that."

White has revealed that Diaz is heading towards the last fight of his deal, but has remained quiet on wether or not he will be looking to make a new deal.

His brother Nick recently returned to the sport after six-and-a-half years out, losing his comeback bout to Robbie Lawlor after struggling to make weight and changing the fight from a welterweight bout to middleweight.

And it remains to be seen if the younger Diaz brother will get his wish of fighting the ever-exciting Ferguson, or if White will push forward with making a Luque bout.

"Yeah, he's got one more fight," White said at a press conference last night. We're working on a fight for him.

"Tony wasn't one of those guys we were working on but we're working on a fiver for Nate now. He's got one fight left."

Social media sensation Paul is expected to fight Tommy Fury in December, and could be ready to face Diaz in the early-to-middle part of next year.

It had been reported that Paul would fight Fury a week before Christmas in Miami, but his promotional company 'Most Valuable Promotions' have denied the supposed date and location.
