Europe regained the Ryder Cup off Team USA, with Tommy Fleetwood securing the winning point to clinch a dramatic 16.5-11.5 victory in Rome. But one of the highlights of Sunday’s play was when an old man beat Ryder Cup security to jump in the lake at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club to celebrate Europe’s victory. Golf fans have branded the man a KFC Colonel Sanders look-a-like.
Donning all-white, the man made a big splash, much to the Ryder Cup crowd’s delight. “Colonel Sanders getting a bit loose at the Ryder Cup,” one golf fan said on X, formerly Twitter. Another added: “Who let Colonel Sanders into the Ryder Cup?”
The moment summed up the wild celebrations that took place around the course after Europe’s win was confirmed. The USA could do nothing but watch on and congratulate their opponents after the win.
The 2023 Ryder Cup action-packed on the green and off it. The contest descended into bad blood amid accusations of “cheating”. And tempers flaring saw Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay’s caddie engage in a furious row on Saturday night. The argument spilled out into the car park.
But it was all worth it for Europe, whose team captain, Luke Donald, admitted the win made him emotional. “It’s been a long process, an amazing journey and I have really enjoyed this one,” he said. “It was stressful as the US put up a fight today so hats off to them. But I am so proud of my 12 guys. We formed a bond from day one and they gave me everything. They trusted me and they delivered for me.
“We started off great, which was what we needed. Then a few matches changed to red.
“We kept looking at the board and thinking, where will we find 14 and a half points? But we always had some guys at the back that looked good so it’s not going to be quite as close as I thought it might be. I can’t even speak

“I really didn’t want it to come down to one of us at the back,” man of the moment Fleetwood said after his win secured victory. “I can’t wait to see the rest of the guys, I can’t wait to see the captain, our wives, and the rest of our families.
“I’m just so happy to play a part in it and so proud to be part of this team. We’ve done what we came here to do. I couldn’t wish for a better bunch of people to do this with. It has been so amazing. It’s the coolest experience.”
