Lane Kiffin must have enjoyed watching Peyton and Eli Manning call the “Monday Night Football” matchup because he wants to see more.
Specifically, he wants to see the Manning brothers return to their alma maters for the upcoming SEC clash on Oct. 16, when Tennessee hosts Ole Miss.
For the Ravens-Raiders game on Monday, Peyton and Eli were on the call on ESPN2 and provided a different brand of commentary. There were jokes and analysis as the two broke down the wild matchup.
The Mannings are on the call for nine more NFL games this season and 10 in each of the next two years. They are currently not scheduled for any college football games.
Peyton was the quarterback at Tennessee from 1994 to 1997, and finished his career having completed 62.5 percent of his passes for 11,201 yards, 89 touchdowns and 33 interceptions. He finished second in Heisman Trophy voting in 1997 when he threw 36 touchdowns to 11 interceptiosn with 3,819 passing yards. The Colts drafted him first overall the following summer. During his Tennessee career, he twice faced off against Ole Miss and won both times, first 41-3 in 1996 and then 31-17 in 1997.
Eli, like his father Archie Manning, went to Ole Miss, where he played from 2000 to 2003, taking up the starting role after his first season. He threw for at least 3,000 passing yards in each of his junior and senior years and completed 31 touchdown passes as a sophomore and 29 touchdown passes as a senior. He finished his career with a 60.8 percent completion percentage with 81 touchdowns and 35 picks before he was drafted first overall in 2004 by the Chargers. Eli never faced Tennessee in his Rebels career.
Tennessee and Ole Miss have played one another only four times since 2000, with the Vols winning all but once. The Volunteers have the all-time edge with a record of 44-19-1.
Kiffin is in his second year as Ole Miss’ head coach after he ran the show at Florida Atlantic from 2017 to 2019. Kiffin memorabably left Tennessee after one season as coach for USC, sparking a near riot on campus when he departed.
