Stephon Gilmore left the Patriots’ Week 15 game against the Dolphins with a non-contact injury that appeared to be to his left leg. The Patriots quickly ruled Gilmore doubtful to return with a knee injury.
After the star New England cornerback initially headed to the blue medical tent on the sideline, he was taken to the locker room for further evaluation. The injury came while Gilmore guarded Miami receiver Mack Hollins along the sideline. When Hollins cut back toward the ball, Gilmore’s left knee didn’t plant as he hoped.
Gilmore can be seen holding his left knee area as he fell to the ground in the above video. According to Sports Injury Predictor, Gilmore hasn’t suffered a recorded knee injury during his NFL or college career prior to Sunday.
The Patriots’ 2020 season may not depend on Gilmore’s outlook, as New England is having its worst season in multiple decades. But it’s still a big blow for a defense that hasn’t been up to its 2019 standards. Last season, Gilmore was the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year. He’s regressed this season, recording only one interception in 10-plus games.
