The NFC North has already been decided, but the Packers and the Vikings still have a lot on the line when they square off in Week 17.
Green Bay is playing for the No. 1 seed in the NFC. They have posted a 12-3 record to date and with a win, they can give themselves a commanding lead in the race for that coveted first-round bye in the 2022 NFL playoffs. Aaron Rodgers is also trying to earn his second consecutive MVP to become the first player since Peyton Manning to win the award in back-to-back years.
Minnesota, meanwhile, is playing for its postseason life. They very likely need to win out to have a chance to make the playoffs and Mike Zimmer’s job may depend on it. His seat is heating up as the Vikings haven’t found playoff success in recent seasons despite the team’s ownership group investing heavily in player contracts, including that of Kirk Cousins. Cousins will miss the game after he was placed on the COVID reserve list this week.
Can the Packers take control of the NFC and knock out their divisional rival? Or will the Vikings keep their playoff hopes alive without Cousins and open the path for another team to overtake Green Bay atop the NFC?
Below is more about the Week 17 matchup, plus everything to know about how to watch “Sunday Night Football.”
Who plays on ‘Sunday Night Football’ tonight?
The Vikings (7-8) are traveling to Lambeau Field to take on the Packers (12-3) in what could be Minnesota’s last-gasp effort to stay in the playoff race.
Minnesota won back-to-back games to improve to 7-7 before suffering a seven-point loss to the Rams in Week 16. They are now a game back of the Eagles and 49ers in the NFC playoff race and need to win to have a good chance of tying and overtaking one in the standings.
The Vikings have been banged-up in recent weeks, and they will be shorthanded this week as well. Kirk Cousins is on the COVID list and out, so Sean Mannion will start in his place. Adam Thielen (ankle) is out as well. The Vikings did beat the Packers earlier in the season, but it will be hard for them to keep things as close as they did with a backup quarterback in.
As for Green Bay, they have control of their own destiny and are pushing for the No. 1 seed in the NFC. They are coming off a win against the Browns where they won by just two points, but they should be motivated to earn revenge against the Vikings.
Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams and Aaron Jones should have a good game against a Vikings defense that has generated turnovers of late but has struggles to slow opposing offenses down. They cut veteran corner and starter Bashaud Breeland a couple of weeks ago and it seems like they miss him a bit. Adams should take advantage of this absence and may be in for a big day against the Vikings.
