Congrats, Johnny Gaudreau! You freaked out the entire hockey world.
Within a matter of minutes, social media went from — oh my God! the Flames traded Gaudreau! To oh, um, yea, no, never mind.
Here’s a quick timeline of what exactly happened on Monday in what is now being called: #peegate.
1:21 p.m. ET
Tweets start flying from the Flames media in attendance at practice in Boston when Gaudreau leaves practice early — roughly 99 minutes (yep, 99 minutes) from the trade deadline.
1:28 p.m. ET
While everyone held their collective breath to see where the Flames winger was going — Colorado? New York Islanders? Toronto? — the rumors were quelled within a few minutes.
1:50 p.m. ET
So what exactly happened? Why did the long-time Flames star leave practice early?
According to Postmedia’s Wes Gilbertson, it was pretty simple:
“I didn’t think it was going to be that big of a deal,” Gaudreau told reporters with a smile, noting practice was almost done and head coach Geoff Ward said he could go, resulting in his phone blowing up.
“Next time I will hold it in as long as I can, until practice is over.”
