Vitamin B12 deficiency can result in serious health issues if left long-term. Tiredness can be a sign you aren’t getting enough of the vitamin.

What are the signs of B12 deficiency?

Nutritionist Rosie Millen told the main symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency to look out for.

The most important of them all is feeling tired, Rosie said.

“Fatigue! Extreme fatigue,” Rosie pointed to as a key symptom of the deficiency.

Other symptoms include a pale tongue or constipation and gas.

It can also cause nerve problems, vision loss, and depression, and memory loss.

What is B12?

B12 is also known as cobalamin.

It is hugely important, as it helps create the structure of your DNA.

It also helps to make your red blood cells.

The average adult should get 2.4 mcg a day, 2.6 mcg if pregnant and 2.8 mcg if breastfeeding.

What does a B12 deficiency mean?

Long-term the deficiency can cause nerve damage.

Treatment should begin within six months of experiencing symptoms.

What foods contain B12?

B12 is found in animal products such as:

  • Beef
  • Chicken
  • Liver
  • Fish
  • Shellfish
  • Milk
  • Yoghurt
  • Cheese
  • Eggs

For those who don’t eat animal products, vitamin B12 supplements are available.

Rosie also discussed iron deficiency symptoms. 

Rosie was asked which are the most dangerous and prevalent vitamin deficiencies.

Rosie said: “The most prevalent deficiency that is most notable is an iron deficiency which leads to anemia.”

She said there is one major diet and lifestyle change causing the deficiency. “Many people who change their diet and cut out red meat tend to experience this,” she said.
