Max Verstappen will be looking to keep the likes of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton at bay over the course of today’s sprint event to ensure that he starts tomorrow’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix from pole position on the grid. The Dutchman managed to set the fastest lap in Friday’s qualifying session and will be hoping to stay ahead of his Drivers’ Championship rivals by taking the chequered flag at the end of the 21-lap contest at Imola.

Leclerc will also start today’s sprint on the front row of the grid after finishing behind only Verstappen at the end of Q3, while Lando Norris and Kevin Magnussen performed well in the rainy conditions on Friday and will line up in third and fourth place respectively.

Meanwhile, the Mercedes duo of Hamilton and George Russell failed to make it out of Q2 and will need to improve to stand any chance of climbing up the order ahead of tomorrow’s race. The latter topped the standings at the end of the final practice session, though, which suggests that Mercedes could finally be closing in on a welcome solution to their early-season problems.

Express Sport is on hand to provide live updates from today’s on-track action at Imola.

Max Verstappen set the quickest lap in Q3 on Friday to book his place on the front of the grid for today’s sprint at the end of a hugely eventful qualifying session.

The red flags were waved on no less than five occasions under rainy conditions at the iconic Imola circuit, with Lando Norris, Valtteri Bottas and Alex Albon among the drivers who struggled to stay on track throughout the day’s running.

Norris did manage to secure a third-placed finish with his lap in Q3, though, while Kevin Magnussen was able to seal Haas’ best ever qualifying result by coming home in fourth.

Meanwhile, it was another dismal performance from Mercedes, who failed to make it out of Q2 with George Russell ending up two places ahead of Lewis Hamilton in 11th and 13th respectively.
