F1 icon Eddie Irvine had awkward date with Kelly Brook including hotel "fumble"

Ex-Formula 1 star Eddie Irvine could handle rainy races, swerving chicanes and high-speed overtakes – but struggled to impress actor and model Kelly Brook.

Irvine competed in F1 between 1993 and 2002, competing for Jordan, Ferrari and Jaguar. He finished runner-up in the 1999 Drivers’ Championship while with the Scuderia, showcasing his talent to secure four race wins while McLaren’s Mika Hakkinen romped to the title.

Irvine was a renowned playboy, rumoured to have gotten close to the likes of Pamela Anderson, and Rod Stewart’s ex-wife Rachel Hunter in the past. But despite his record on and off the track, Irvine failed to convert his date opportunity with Brook, who was a teenager at the time.

Brook revealed all about her date with the F1 star in her autobiography 'Close Up' published in 2014, describing it as ‘the most awkward and uncomfortable’ date of her life.

The pair first met at Silverstone when she was just 18 and Irvine was 32, with Brook recalling: “I stood next to him and smiled for the camera, and that was that. But obviously he asked someone who I was and later called me.”

During the phone call, Irvine reportedly attempted to woo Brook by suggesting he would fly from his home in Monaco on his private jet to take her to dinner in Rochester, her hometown. However, Brook admitted she panicked and rather embarrassingly said she’d have to ask her mum first.

“I was just freaked out,” the 42-year-old said. “I was living at home with my mum and dad, and knew nothing of private jets, let alone if you could land one at Rochester Airport.

“I didn’t even know of a restaurant in Rochester where we could have had dinner, even if he did manage to land the jet. All I was thinking was, ‘I’d better look in the Yellow Pages.’ I had no game, I wasn’t cool.”

In the end, the couple had dinner together at the exclusive and expensive Nobu restaurant – but it wasn’t exactly smooth sailing. The choice of cuisine threw Brook off, and ultimately set the tone for an unsettling night.

“I’d never even eaten Japanese in my life but I ordered a seaweed salad, which was the most disgusting thing I’d ever eaten,” Brook revealed. “I pretended that chewing on a mouthful of salty rubber was the most normal and delicious thing in the world. It was the most awkward, uncomfortable date I’ve ever been on.

“Eventually, after heading out to a nightclub, I went back to his hotel room and we had a kiss and a fumble, and that was that.”

After the night, Brook decided not to continue seeing Irvine due to the 14-year age gap between the pair. She acknowledged the gap when the F1 star said he was going to see his daughter that day.

“Next morning, his driver drove me home and Eddie said he was going to visit his daughter,” Brook added. “It made me realise how much older he was. I was just 18 and he was 14 years older and had a child, so I rather backed off him.”

Brook has since dated several stars including Jason Statham and Billy Zane, as well as rugby's Danny Cipriani. However, she is currently in a relationship with Jeremy Parisi.

Meanwhile, Irvine had daughter Zoe with former girlfriend and model Maria Drummond.
