Max Verstappen leads the world championship by 46 points from team-mate Sergio Perez with Charles Leclerc a further three points back. The Dutchman’s commanding championship lead is down to securing six wins from nine races, seven of which he has finished.

Verstappen’s excellent consistency should give him an excellent chance to rid the demons of 12 months ago when he retired from the British Grand Prix after a spectacular crash. However, the reigning champion could be under more pressure this weekend after his girlfriend’s father, Nelson Piquet, racially abused Lewis Hamilton.

The former F1 champion used a racial slur when describing the accident between the pair back in July last year. Despite this, Mercedes will arrive at Silverstone with optimism as the team brings new upgrades to the car.

The changes and smooth track surface are expected to push Hamilton and George Russell closer to the front.

Nelson Piquet could be banned from F1 if he does not apologise for a racial slur directed against Lewis Hamilton.

The Press Association said the former world champion could have his paddock pass revoked due to the incident.

    Red Bull sack star

Red Bull have sacked F2 driver Juri Vips after the Estonian made a racial remark while playing video games.

The Red Bull junior driver had his contract with the team as test and reserve terminated ahead of the British Grand Prix weekend.

They said: “Following its investigation into an online incident involving Juri Vips, Oracle Red Bull Racing has terminated Juri’s contract as its test and reserve driver.

“The team do not condone any form of racism.”

    Christian Horner makes Mercedes dig

Christian Horner said anyone writing off Mercedes has “short memories” as the Silver Arrows have only not been winning for about “eight or nine races”.

Horner also commented Silverstone was one of the races that “means the most” a year on from Max Verstappen’s high-speed with Lewis Hamilton

He said: “They’ve only not been winning for about eight or nine races or 10 races so it’s amazing how short memories are in this business.

“Silverstone is one of the big ones, it’s one of the ones that means the most so of course it will be very emotional to see if we can win that race.”
