Lando Norris has warned Ferrari that McLaren are only going to get better after teammate Daniel Ricciardo won the Italian Grand Prix. The Australian secured his first win since 2016 – when he was at Red Bull – during the race at Monza.

Norris came home in second to secure a famous one-two for McLaren, their first such result since the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix.

The 21-year-old is fourth in the drivers’ standings, while Ricciardo lies in eighth after originally struggling to get to grips with his new car after switching from Renault.

However, Norris believes the improved form of the 32-year-old can help them seal third in the Constructors’ Championship ahead of Ferrari.

“We’re racing Ferrari, who have got two extremely good drivers, to beat them week in week out…it’s been a tough first half of the season for us when Daniel has been struggling that little bit, but now he’s come through a bit more,” Norris told Motorsport Week.

“I think he’s showing what he can do and what everyone knows he can do, and the reason [why] he came to McLaren.

“It’s only going to be better for all of us.”

The young Brit is experiencing a terrific season, securing four podiums including one at the glamorous Monaco Grand Prix.

Norris spoke about Ricciardo’s return to form positively as he is confident the Honey Badger will push the team on to greater things.

“In terms of what he can do on track now compared to what he could do a few months ago he’s definitely a lot closer, for sure,” Norris admitted.

“It’s also good for me in a way, as much as I hate it because you want to beat anyone in any circumstance!

“It’s only going to push me more, push the team more, help us as a team in the Constructors’ as well.”

It is Ricciardo’s first season at the famous manufacturer after he secured two podiums with Renault in 2020.

Norris said the team believed they could score a potential podium in Monza after Carlos Sainz finished second for McLaren last season.

He insisted the one-two finish was earned on merit and pace while he praised the hard work back at the team’s headquarters in Woking.

Formula 1 returns for the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi on September 26, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen holding a slender five-point lead over seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
