Horror as ‘distraught’ NRL star collapses

Brisbane star Jack Bird was screaming expletives as he limped off the training field after going down with what looked like a serious a knee injury.

The Broncos fullback collapsed during a drill at the club’s Red Hill base and was in agony, leaving many to fear the worst for the 24-year-old.

“He looked absolutely distraught,” Fox Sports reporter Mark Gottlieb said in a live TV cross, calling it a “shocking incident”.

“This is devastating news for the Broncos.”

Bird missed much of last season after rupturing his ACL and in 2018, his first year with the Broncos after leaving the Sharks, he was limited to just eight games because of a sternum injury.

The versatile back was named to wear the No. 1 jersey in Brisbane’s season-opening clash against North Queensland on Friday night but is now expected to miss the game.

It’s a huge blow for a Brisbane side whose backline is crying out for star quality. Bird has played Origin for NSW and, after having been tried at five-eighth and in the centres, was given the nod to start the season at fullback by coach Anthony Seibold.

He took the place of former fullback and captain Darius Boyd, who has been shunted into the centres after a disappointing 2019 campaign when he endured a rough form slump.

Bird will likely be replaced at the back by Jamayne Isaako, who was fighting for the custodian role during pre-season but was beaten out by the former Cronulla player.
