Four-time premiership great Sam Mitchell will take over from Alastair Clarkson as Hawthorn coach in 2023 under a succession plan announced by the club on Tuesday.
The Age revealed on Monday evening that Mitchell had withdrawn from contention to replace Nathan Buckley as senior coach at Collingwood.

Clarkson, one of the great coaches of the modern era, took the reins at Hawthorn in 2005, following the resignation of Peter Schwab.
He is the longest-serving and most successful coach in the club’s history, leading the Hawks to flags in 2008 and a celebrated ‘three-peat’ from 2013-15.
Mitchell was captain for the first premiership before handing over to Luke Hodge in 2011, but finished his playing career with five best-and-fairest awards and the retrospectively-awarded 2012 Brownlow Medal.
