G’day and welcome to Friday night footy!
Now that the Olympics are over, it’s time for the NRL to give us some much-needed escapism from the tedium of life in lockdown.
We start proceedings with a good-old fashioned stinkfest. St George Illawarra coach Anthony Griffin will coach against Penrith for the first time since being controversially sacked at the foot of the mountains. Things have worked out pretty well for the Panthers after a tricky start under Ivan Cleary, although it must be remembered the team had a share of fourth spot when Griffin was sacked.
I spoke to coach Griffin earlier this week and he wasn’t prepared to buy into the significance of this showdown. However, he would love nothing more than to derail the Panthers by getting his own side’s playoff ambitions back on track.

That task has been made harder by the inclusion of Nathan Cleary, who makes his long-awaited return from a shoulder injury.
In the second game, the Broncos host the Roosters. Everyone is tipping the Chooks to win this one, but it should be noted Brisbane produced the upset of the season when the teams collided a couple of months ago.
