“The allegations are false and constitute an indefensible defamation against my client,” Mr O’Brien told the newspaper.

“It is apparent sources of the false allegations are those currently in dispute with my client over various issues.”

On Friday night, The Australian made more allegations in relation to the 2018 sexting scandal.

The scandal broke just prior to the Rabbitohs 12-4 preliminary final loss to the Roosters when a woman alleged she was exposed to inappropriate images in a video chat from one of Burgess’s social media accounts with other Souths players.

The woman emailed the club about the incident and said she felt violated, alleging some of the players exposed themselves to her, but Burgess was cleared after an investigation by the club.

The Australian report alleges that Burgess and Billy Smith, who reportedly had a connection with the women at the centre of the scandal were involved in a heated exchange. Burgess reportedly blamed Smith for exposing the sexting scandal.

The Weekend Australian cites “Roosters sources” as claiming “Burgess had blasted Smith with an expletive-filled tirade in the tunnel after the September 5 game against the Roosters.”

It also alleged that the Burgess “sat outside the home of Smith for an hour” as he looked to confront him over the belief he was behind “exposing the sexting scandal”.

The report also detailed Burgess admitting to his estranged wife that he had an affair in Melbourne while captaining England at the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

The Daily Telegraph released a series of WhatsApp messages between Burgess and a woman between October 2017 and May 2018 which included details to meet up at Melbourne hotels.
