Roman Abramovich could launch a huge offer to bring Romelu Lukaku back to Chelsea – if he misses out on top target Erling Haaland.
The Blues look certain to be in the market for a striker this summer, despite splashing out on forwards just last year.
Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech all arrived under Frank Lampard, but Chelsea still lack a proven No.9.
Lampard’s replacement, Thomas Tuchel, has tried a variety of options at centre forward, with none really pressing for a long-term run.
Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham have also both been handed chances, but Tuchel has yet to stick with one player.
That means Abramovich is prepared to sanction another massive deal when the window opens at the end of the season.
Calciomercato claim that Borussia Dortmund superstar Haaland is at the top of Chelsea’s wishlist, but face a battle with a host of clubs across Europe to secure his signature.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Man City have also been linked, with agent Mino Raiola reportedly setting up a series of meetings last week.
Should they fail to bring in the Norwegian, the report suggests they will turn to Lukaku, who left Stamford Bridge in 2014.
He has since had spells at Everton, Manchester United and currently finds himself at Inter Milan, where he has 60 goals in just 86 games.
The Italian giants are determined to hold on to the Belgian, but are aware that Chelsea have the kind of finances to test their resolve.
It is claimed that the Londoners could make a bid in the region of £86million for their former striker, one that would surely be difficult to turn down.
He was asked about potentially returning to the English top flight during a Q&A session on Twitter in April of last year.

To which he responded by saying: "I don't think so but I loved my time at Everton for real."
Meanwhile, Chelsea continue to be linked with Sergio Aguero, who is said to be ‘tempted’ to join the Blues when he leaves Man City this summer.
However, while there is believed to some mutual interest, Calciomercato seem to suggest he is a distant third in their list of desired targets, behind the aforementioned Haaland and Lukaku.
