Ajax vs Liverpool predictions: Who will win the Champions League match?

Ajax and Liverpool last met competitively back in the 1966/67 European Cup. The sides faced off in the last 16, with Ajax winning 7-2 on aggregate. However, since losing that tie, Liverpool have gone 13 games unbeaten against Dutch opponents in European competitions.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has more recent memories of the facing Ajax from his time with Borussia Dortmund, winning both home and away fixtures in the group stage of the 2012/13 competition.

“[Our] proper analysis didn’t start yet, not with me,” Klopp said ahead of the clash at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

“After this I have the analysis meeting so then I will know much more about it, but in general yes [it feels like a big European game].

“If you think, and if you thought in the past, about European football Liverpool was 100 per cent involved and Ajax as well, so that’s how it is.

“One of the highlights of my time at Dortmund was for sure the two games against Ajax, just for a personal reason. You think: ‘OK, you want to play in this stadium against a young, very exciting team’.”

The Ajax vs Liverpool predictions below have been provided by thepools.com.

The percentages shown are based on how fans have been betting on the Champions League clash.

A spokesperson for thepools.com: “The last time Liverpool played Ajax in Amsterdam, England were world champions, a precociously talented teenager called Cruyff ran the show – and the English champions were walloped 5-1.

“That was the scoreline in Ajax’s last match before this showdown, too, but Heerenveen is hardly the kind of challenge Jurgen Klopp’s side will pose on Wednesday.

“Liverpool are given a 59% chance of victory by the pools.com, with Ajax just a 22% chance. But what’s more certain is goals!

“Ajax were eliminated from last season’s group stage despite collecting ten points with an average of three goals per game.

“Liverpool, of course, have conceded nine goals across their last two matches – and two or more in four of their last seven competitive fixtures.

“And here’s the rub – not only is Virgil van Dijk sidelined, goalkeeper Alisson is also still absent. And in 36 Champions League matches under Klopp, Liverpool have conceded an average of 1.50 goals without the Brazilian between the posts, against 0.89 when he’s been there.

“So Over 3.5 goals is a 50% chance of happening, with Over 2.5 a huge 71% chance.

“Liverpool to win and Both Teams to Score has a 38.8% chance.

“Liverpool’s away record isn’t wildly convincing, the Reds have won just four of their last ten in all competitions, but they should have too much firepower to score more than they will inevitably concede.

“Mo Salah has scored in four of the Reds’ last seven European aways and he is given a 24% chance of opening the scoring and a 55.6% chance of scoring at any time in the match.

“Dusan Tadic is on penalties for Ajax, and has three goals across five competitive matches this season – all struck within the first 30 minutes of a match.

“He is is given just a 12% chance of scoring first and a 33.3% chance of scoring at any time in the match.

Ajax vs Liverpool kicks off at 8pm BST on Wednesday, October 21.
