Allan Saint-Maximin says he has 'nothing to envy' to Sadio Mane

‘When it comes to pure quality, I have no cause to be jealous of Sadio Mane’: Newcastle’s Allan Saint-Maximin insists he is on the same level as Liverpool’s Senegal star – and claims he’d have 15 assists a season if he had better team-mates!

  • 25-year-old Allan Saint-Maximin has five goals this season to Sadio Mane’s 21
  • He said he would have better stats if his team-mates could convert their chances
  • The Frenchman is yet to play for his country and has not won a senior trophy
  • Mane could still back up last year’s AFCON win with a quadruple for Liverpool

Newcastle forward Allan Saint-Maximin has left fans scratching their heads after claiming he has ‘no cause to be jealous’ of Sadio Mane, despite the Senegalese winger scoring four times more goals than him this season.

The Frenchman also took a dig at his team-mates, saying he would have much better statistics if the players around him could convert chances better.

Saint-Maximin has managed five goals in 34 appearances for the Magpies this season as they have recovered from a poor start and look set for a mid-table finish.

Sadio Mane was named player of the tournament as Senegal won the African Cup of Nations

Meanwhile Sadio Mane has netted 21 goals in 46 games this season as an integral part of a Liverpool side that are still on for an historic quadruple.

The 30-year-old winger was also player of the tournament in the Africa Cup of Nations, as he guided Senegal to their first win in the competition. Saint-Maximin is yet to make a full debut for France.

‘Those who have played alongside me know full well that when it comes to pure quality, I have no cause to be jealous of Sadio Mane,’ Saint-Maximin told So Foot.

Bruno Guimaraes (centre) has outplayed Allan Saint-Maximin since joining the Magpies

‘The day I get a team-mate who is able to convert the chances I create, I will have 10 to 15 successful assists every season. That will increase my profile in people’s minds.’

The 25-year-old had been Newcastle’s star player for much of this season, but has recently been overshadowed by the arrival of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, who has 4 goals in 14 games this season.

Saint Maximin added: ‘My aim is to do things that leave a mark on people’s minds, and to change the rules.

‘In a similar way to what Michael Jordan has managed to do. He has changed people’s lives. Jordan has given motivation to people, and that is beautiful.’
