West Brom boss Sam Allardyce has revealed that targeting “rash” Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was the key to beating the Blues.
Thomas Tuchel saw his unbeaten run at Stamford Bridge come to a brutal end, losing 5-2 to the Premier League relegation battlers.
Losing defender Thiago Silva to a red card after 27 minutes, the floodgates opened for the Baggies.
But Allardyce, who has now won three of his 18 games in charge at The Hawthornes, was actually targeting shot-stopper Mendy with his tactics.
Speaking to talkSPORT, the mastermind of the victory said: “Letting them play out from the back for the goalkeeper would be a mistake.
“That may have been a tactic we used later in the game but if it works try and keep doing it for as long as possible. That’s why we played two split up front with Mateus Pereira and Mbaye Diagne.
“The press worked very, very well and there is something with their goalkeeper, who can be rash, he can rush out.”
Mendy was one of Frank Lampard’s arrivals last summer, joining for £22m from Rennes.
And he put in some impressive performances to take the No.1 jersey from Kepa Arrizabalaga, conceding just two goals in his first 12 games.
Despite a turnaround in fortune under Lampard before his dismissal, Tuchel kept faith in the Senegalese international.
Mendy, though, could do nothing as West Brom tore through Chelsea across the park for all of their goals.
Allardyce added: “If you saw the first goal we scored, he came dashing to the edge of his box and didn’t get anywhere near.

“We felt every time we went back to the goal and we put him under pressure that gave us good opportunities.
“Obviously you could say the sending off helped, playing against ten men, but you’ve got to beat what’s still a very good side.”
The Blues could drop out of the Premier League top four if West Ham can secure victory over Wolves.
