New Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has been backed to replicate his work with Romelu Lukaku with struggling striker Harry Kane. The England captain has scored just one goal in the Premier League this season, following a failed move to Manchester City in the summer.

It has been by far Kane’s worst start to a campaign in recent years, having won the Golden Boot last year.

The 28-year-old has undoubtedly been affected by the collapse of his potential transfer to City, who balked at Tottenham’s high asking price for the striker.

Kane took exceptional measures in an attempt to force through a move, missing the final week of pre-season.

While he later insisted that was only due to Covid-19 restrictions, Kane’s absence meant that he appeared undercooked in his first few games.

The defensive tactics of Nuno Espirito Santo also did not help the striker to find the back of the net.

Nuno was sacked following a heavy defeat to Manchester United, with former Inter Milan boss Conte taking charge.

The Italian enjoyed great success with Lukaku at Inter during the duo’s two years at the San Siro.

Lukaku arrived at Inter following a tough spell at United, where he failed to score more than 16 goals in the top-flight during his two campaigns at Old Trafford.

But that form changed completely under Conte at Inter, with the Belgian scoring 64 goals in all competitions.

That included 24 goals in Serie A last season as Inter stormed to the title, breaking Juventus’ stranglehold on the Scudetto.

And former Spurs star Robbie Keane believes that Conte can replicate that success with Kane at Spurs.

“If you look at Conte when he went to Inter Milan and what he did with Lukaku, he made Lukaku play in between the 18-yard box and that’s all he was worried about,” he told Sky Sports.

“When Lukaku was in the Premier League, he used to do a lot of running outside of the box – right-wing, left-wing.

“Harry has adapted to playing that kind of number ten role, Conte will say I want you further up the pitch as possible and stop dropping deep because you have players like Son who naturally drop off.

“You need your number nine, your focal point and Harry is that. You wouldn’t be surprised if he scores a couple today and then goes on a run.”

Kane is yet to score in Conte’s first three games in charge, drawing blanks against Vitesse Arnhem, Everton and Leeds United.

His next chance to break that duck will come on Thursday with a trip to Mura in the Europa Conference League, before a Premier League visit to Burnley next Sunday.
