Antonio Conte wants new spine for Spurs team with four names in mind for January

Antonio Conte wants to sign the spine of a new Tottenham team in January.

Spurs handed the manager's job to the Italian on Tuesday in a major coup, with Conte signing an 18-month contract with an option to extend.

And the 52-year-old, who has been promised a bumper transfer budget, wants a defender, midfielder and striker signed in January.

Top of his wishlist is Fiorentina centre forward Dusan Vlahovic, a long-term Spurs target who has already scored ten times in 12 games in Italy this season.

Conte also hopes to raid former club Inter Milan for a centre back, with 26-year-old Milan Skriniar and 29-year-old Stefan De Vrij both under consideration.

AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie, 24, whose contract runs out next year, is currently the favourite to toughen up the engine room, but other names are also being discussed.

Spurs have promised to make big a splash for Conte, who replaced sacked boss Nuno Espirito Santo and is under orders to help them back into contention for the top four.

He said: "I am extremely happy to return to coaching, and to do so at a Premier League club that has the ambition to be a protagonist again.

"I can't wait to start working to convey to the team and the fans the passion, mentality and determination that have always distinguished me, as a player and as a coach."

Conte also claimed "the contagious enthusiasm and determination" of Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy helped convince him to take a job he turned down five months ago.

But the 52-year-old, who watched training yesterday, may have to wait for his debut in the dug-out.

Spurs face Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa Conference League tomorrow but if his Visa does not come through in time then Conte's first match in charge could be at Everton this Sunday.
