Arsenal and Newcastle target Lucas Paqueta asks to leave after constant rumours

Lyon’s president has admitted the French club have received offers for wantaway midfielder Lucas Paqueta.

Both Arsenal and Newcastle are looking to add to their already busy transfer windows by signing the Lyon playmaker this summer. The 24-year-old has stood out since his 2020 move to Ligue 1 from AC Milan but is now believed to be in search of a new challenge.

Lyon’s underwhelming season meant they finished eighth in the French top flight, therefore missing out on European football. And club president Jean-Michel Aulas has now revealed the player could leave this summer in a cryptic response to journalists.

Aulas said regarding the Brazilian’s future: “There are proposals for him. There are certain players who can feel complete in the project, and others who don't.

“Economically, we have the means to pursue our ideas and objectives.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is understood to have been tracking the Brazil international for some time. That is despite the Spaniard successfully signing Fabio Vieira this summer to add to his collection of attacking-midfielders which already included Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard.

Newcastle have also kept a close eye on Paqueta since the January transfer window, having already signed his former team-mate Bruno Guimaraes last season. Paqueta was even seen on Tyneside back in May during birthday celebrations for Guimaraes’ girlfriend.

Yet it is unclear whether Paqueta would end up picking the Saudi-backed club over fifth-placed Arsenal. Meanwhile, his current manager has expressed his desire to keep the midfielder, who registered 21 goals and 13 assists in 77 appearances last campaign.

Manager Peter Bosz said: “I want to keep all the good players, but you also have to be realistic. There is the player who is very important in the matter, the coach, the club, the other clubs. It is always a game between the different parties.

“Lucas is a very important player, but it depends on what the player wants. I already had a conversation with him, but that will be between us.”
