Arsenal came close to agreeing a two season loan in January with an obligation to buy but, with no guarantees of Champions League football, they were restricted by their budget.

Owner Stan Kroenke has since released funds to allow Mikel Arteta to strengthen and they have used the money well to bring in Porto’s Fabio Vieira, Gabriel Jesus and they expect Oleksandr Zinchenko.

They had considered Leicester’s Youri Tielemans but until players leave that has been shelved.

Talks have taken place over a deal for Arthur as an alternative option but nothing is advanced as it stands.

He has interest from a number of clubs including his former side Barcelona as the stylish midfielder has shown a willingness to take a wage cut to make a move happen.
