Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta surely didn’t expect his side’s start to the season. The Gunners are flying high at the top of the Premier League table when the main aim this term is to just get back in the Champions League.

Arteta will not be getting carried away, with the north London derby against Tottenham next up set to be a true test of Arsenal’s credentials. Sunday’s win over Brentford arguably was their best performance of the campaign so far.

Against an in-form Bees team, Arsenal were dominant from minute one. Last season, Arteta had a crop of players he would rely upon week in, week out.

This year, that number has increased. Express Sport looks at four Arsenal players who have made themselves undroppable this season.

Thomas Frank praises Arsenal

William Saliba

Saliba is very much like a new signing for Arsenal. He hadn’t played a single minute for the club before this season despite signing three years ago.

Many were critical of Arteta for loaning him out last term but it has proven to be a masterstroke. Saliba has slotted seamlessly into the backline as if he has been playing in the Premier League for years.

£50million signing Ben White has been moved out of his usual centre-back position to accommodate Saliba. Only an injury now would see him move back into the middle.

Granit Xhaka

In truth, Xhaka has been a player Arteta has relied on previously. But now the Swiss is starting to really show his true quality in midfield.

Xhaka is not a defensive midfielder and never was. He is now thriving as a left-sided No 8, with a real attacking threat.

Arsenal fans are starting to change their mind on Xhaka. He is one of the first names on the team sheet at the moment.

Gabriel Martinelli

With Emile Smith Rowe not fully fit for the start of the season, and again injured now, the chance was there for Martinelli to nail down a starting spot. The Brazilian has certainly done that.

He has three goals in his seven league appearances and is one of just three Arsenal players to have started every match in all competitions this term. Martinelli was unfortunate to have a goal at Old Trafford ruled out but the way he took the chance showed how much he has improved in those positions.

Gabriel Jesus

Jesus arrived as the first-choice striker but still had to prove why Arsenal decided to spend £45m on him. He has more than done that so far with four goals in seven starts.

It is not just the goal output that has been impressive. Arsenal look so much more dangerous in attack with a striker who’s got it all in Jesus.

Defenders are worried about the Brazilian, something that could rarely be said about Alexandre Lacazette last season. Jesus already has as many league goals as Lacazette managed in his final campaign at the Emirates.
