Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham target Bayern Munich star on free transfer

Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham are in the race to sign Jerome Boateng on a free transfer from Bayern Munich, according to reports in Germany.

The 32-year-old is in his 10th season at Bayern and has helped the club win eight Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies.

Boateng, who joined in 2011 after spending one season at Manchester City, was hoping to extend his current contract with Bayern which expires at the end of the campaign.

But according to Sport Bild, Bayern have decided not to renew Boateng’s deal, which means the defender will be available on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The report claims that Boateng was on Arsenal’s shortlist this summer and the Gunners are still keeping tabs on the defender’s situation.

But Mikel Arteta’s side will also face competition from Tottenham as Sport Bild claim that Jose Mourinho is monitoring Boateng’s contract negotiations.

In April, Sport Bild also reported that Chelsea had made an approach to sign Boateng, although since then Frank Lampard has opted to bring Thiago Silva to Stamford Bridge on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.

Bayern are now targeting RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, who is also wanted by Manchester United, as a replacement for Boateng.

The Germany international has struggled with several injuries in recent years but speaking last month the defender said he was aiming to extend his stay at Bayern after recapturing his form under Hansi Flick.

‘I can imagine [signing a contract extension],’ Boateng told Kicker.

‘My children feel at home here. With Hansi Flick as coach and this team, it’s a lot of fun.

‘In the end, I’m happy to still be with Bayern. I’m enjoying football again.’
