Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has already laid on record his desire to sign a central midfielder this month and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Denis Zakaria ticks just about every box for the Gunners – particularly at just £6million. That’s the price the Bundesliga club are seeking this January to avoid losing the Swiss international for nothing this summer when his current deal expires.

In recent times, Zakaria has been linked with a whole host of Premier League clubs – most notably those competing for the title.

Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United have all been earmarked as potential suitors.

Yet Zakaria has slightly lost his way in the past 12 months and competition for his signature has slowed down.

Roma are now one of the clubs keen to convince Zakaria to join when his Gladbach deal is up.

Yet the German outfit would ideally prefer to sell this month to ensure they still receive a fee.

BILD claim Gladbach would be willing to consider bids as low as £6million for the 25-year-old, who has already won 38 caps for his country.

Not only that but Zakaria has also represented Switzerland at the 2018 World Cup, the 2019 Nations League finals and UEFA Euro 2020.

It was only a short while ago that he was considered to be one of the best midfield players in the Bundesliga as Bayern Munich eyed a lucrative swoop.

Yet the cooling of interest in the defensive-minded star should not put off the likes of Arsenal from making an offer.

In fact, this would be the perfect time to strike given that Zakaria is usually worth in excess of £35m.

Arsenal are desperate for midfield reinforcements based on Sunday’s poor showing against Nottingham Forest after losing Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Elneny is also expected to leave the club this summer when his contract expires with Arsenal in need of some extra muscle in the middle of the park.

Furthermore, Ainsley Maitland-Niles has now joined Roma on loan, meaning Arsenal really are light in that department.

Granit Xhaka has also tested positive for COVID-19, meaning Albert Sambi Lokonga is the club’s only senior central midfielder.

Zakaria is a well-rounded, all-action midfielder too and that is the crucial factor.

He can tackle, protect, win back the ball while there is also quality while in possession.

The Swiss can play as a No 6 or No 8 and has been known to venture forward and arrive in the box from time to time.

At 25, he also fits Arsenal’s newly-devised transfer policy which is centred around signing young players yet to reach their prime.
