Arsenal fans baffled by strange Arteta sub trailing Forest with minutes left

Arsenal fans were left baffled by Mikel Arteta's decision to bring on a defender with his side trailing in the closing stages of their FA Cup tie against Nottingham Forest.

In a game that will not be remembered fondly by Gunners fans and neutrals alike, there was little to separate the two sides in what was a turgid third-round encounter.

That was until the 83rd minute when striker Lewis Grabban connected with Brennan Johnson's pinpoint delivery and slotted the ball past Bernd Leno to send the City Ground into raptures.

Arsenal fans urged Arteta to make a substitution late on to inject more life into the visiting side, and the Spaniard responded with a change that went down about as well as a fart in a lift.

With 90 minutes on the clock and the Gunners needing a goal to send the game to extra-time, Arteta made the bizarre decision to replace Cedric Soares with Sead Kolasinac.

The change, which offered Arsenal precisely zero fresh attacking impetus, went down like a lead balloon on social media among the club's furious fans.

One person tweeted: "No squad depth proving a real issue once again, Soares was HORRID, subbing him off for Kolasinac was probably an even worse decision."

Someone else added: "Crying out for some goal threat Hutchinson, Salah & Biereth on the bench & he sticks on Kolasinac."

A third person commented: "The @Arsenal second string is non existent. Chasing the game and all we had to bring on was Kolasinac. Like what the f*** #AFC #FACup."

While another person moaned: "He bought Kolasinac on when we needed a goal. Nah he wanted to lose this game."

Others suggested it was a message from Arteta to the board about wanting new faces during the January transfer window.

Regardless, Kolasinac did not provide the Gunners with the attacking threat they needed as Forest held on to claim a memorable 1-0 victory – their second FA Cup win over Arsenal in four years.

Steve Cooper's side will face Leicester City in the fourth round, while the north Londoners can now turn their attention to the first-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool.
