Arsenal fans sick realising they may need 100 points to beat Man City to title

Arsenal fans dreaming of their first title since 2003 are coming to the realisation that they may need 100 points to beat Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta's side have started the season like a train, picking up 31 points from the first 36 available. Prior to Sunday's match against Chelsea, the Gunners had won 10, drawn one and lost one of their opening 12 games.

Such form might, ordinarily, see the north Londoners clear at the top of the table. But with an extraordinary side like Pep Guardiola's City in hot pursuit, it's been impossible for Arsenal to put any real distance between themselves and the chasing pack.

City piled the pressure on again on Saturday afternoon, as a late Erling Haaland penalty gave them a narrow 2-1 win over Fulham. It was enough to move the reigning champions back to the top, prompting Arsenal fans to speculate that they may need to score 100 points if they really want to challenge for the title.

"We fully have to get 100 points fam… I'm sick," wrote one supporter. Another said: "This is already stressing me out, how did Liverpool fans cope with this."

A third person added: "If you get 100, City get 102, that’s how it goes." While a fourth user, a Liverpool fan, commented: "And City will still find a way to finish the season with 101 points."

Despite suggestions that Arsenal will require 100 points to overhaul the Sky Blues at the top of the table come the end of the season, Guardiola's side have actually only clocked up a century once.

That was during the 2017-18 season, when City defeated Southampton 1-0 on the final day of the season to become Centurions. Their other title-winning campaigns under Guardiola have seen them record finishes of 98, 86 and 93 points, respectively.

City are currently on 32 points after 13 games of the season. With 25 games remaining of the Premier League season, there are still 75 points on offer, meaning the maximum they could finish up on is 107 points.
