Mikel Arteta and Arsenal reportedly feel that their chances of signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton in the current transfer window are next to impossible. The 24-year-old began the season in impressive fashion, scoring three goals in his first three Premier League matches for the Toffees.

However, a fractured toe suffered during the Everton’s 2-0 away victory against Brighton and Hove Albion side-lined the England international for over three months.

Nevertheless, Arteta’s side has reportedly turned their attention to the former Sheffield United striker, as their previous transfer target Dusan Vlahovic appears to be more keen on a move to Juventus.

Unfortunately, the Gunners’ confidence in signing him this month is very low, due to Everton’s current predicament, according to the Daily Mirror.

After a very strong start to the season, Everton suddenly find themselves in a relegation dogfight.

The Merseysiders commenced their Premier League campaign with four victories, two draws and one defeat from their first eight Premier League matches.

However, a dismal run which has seen them win one of their last thirteen League matches has seen them tumble down to 16th position.

A humiliating away defeat to Norwich City ended Rafael Benitez’s tumultuous reign at Goodison Park after only six months in charge of the club.

Norwich’s proceeding victory against Watford and Newcastle United’s impressive 1-0 away win against Leeds United, means Everton are now only four points from the drop zone.

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle are currently on 15 points in 18th position, but they are in the midst of a positive run of form having drawn two and lost one of their last three Premier League matches.

And the Toffees will likely need all of the help they can muster; therefore, the chances of them parting with their best goalscorer are extremely slim.

The Gunners appear to be aware of this cold reality, but are still keeping tabs on the impressive forward.

However, Arsenal’s chances of signing the striker in the summer will be significantly higher, due to Everton’s perilous financial situation.

The Merseysiders’ transfer activity last summer was squeezed by financial fair play regulations, due to their significant outlays under new owner Farhad Moshiri.

Everton were able to spend £2m in the summer on Asmir Begovic, Demarai Gray, and Andros Townsend.

With the squad appearing to be in need of some serious investment, some players will likely have to be sold in the summer, and Calvert-Lewin is believed to have a £60m price-tag on his head.

And this is where Arsenal could strike, as they are currently facing the prospect of losing all three of their strikers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Eddie Nketiah, and Alexandre Lacazette at the end of the season.

Arsenal had been pursuing Fiorentina striker Vlahovic, but the Serbian striker and his representatives allegedly prefer a move to Juventus.
