Arsenal have transfer plan for Matteo Guendouzi based on Houssem Aouar bid

Arsenal could offload Matteo Guendouzi this summer, but will more than likely wait until January or next summer if they are able to sign Houssem Aouar or Thomas Partey this summer. That’s according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who discussed the French midfielder’s situation on The Tifo Podcast.

Arsenal are still trying to sign a new central midfielder before the transfer window deadline on Monday.

The Gunners are keen on Lyon’s Houssem Aouar, and are locked in talks with intermediators over a fee.

Lyon want £54million for their star man, while Arsenal have only offered below £40m so far.

A deal for Partey is looking less likely, with Aouar their prime target due to Atletico Madrid’s asking price of £45m.

If Aouar arrives, he will push Guendouzi further down the pecking order and fuel speculation linking him with an exit.

The young midfielder hasn’t played since his bust-up with Neal Maupay in Arsenal’s defeat against Brighton last season.

He reportedly handed in a transfer request after falling out with Arteta, and was expected to leave this summer as a result.

Speaking on Tuesday, Ornstein gave an update on the youngster’s situation at the Emirates, and indicated he could be moved on in January if he doesn’t leave this year.

“We know the background on Guendouzi, we just don’t know the future,” he said.

“I think there’s been plenty of interest in him from other clubs, but it hasn’t escalated into concrete offers from other clubs. More so from Arsenal’s perspective, acceptable ones.

“If that was to change before the window closes, it might be deemed desirable for all parties that he moves on.

“Mikel Arteta has said publicly that this season is a clean slate, a fresh opportunity for all players, so presumably that includes the likes of Guendouzi, Ozil, Sokratis, I think he’s very conscious of squad harmony.

“We have seen Guendouzi return to the first-team training set up, just not on matchdays.

“I think there are some bridges that need to be rebuilt, it does seem an element of distrust on both sides. Arsenal want to see him reach the standards that Mikel Arteta expects of all players on a consistent basis.

“And, we know Arsenal are looking to recruit in the centre of midfield, his area of the pitch.

“Could he be a backup option to those players? Or an option if they aren’t signed? I don’t think we’re at that stage just yet.

“If the window closes and Guendouzi is still at the emirates, of course you never say never.

“But I suspect Arsenal would then have an eye on January or next summer [for him to leave].”
