Arsenal star has ‘said his goodbyes’ to team-mates as Houssem Aouar transfer edges closer

Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira said goodbye to his Gunners team-mates at the club’s training ground today ahead of a move to Atletico Madrid, according to reports. Torreira is set to join Atletico on a season-long loan with an option to buy. The deal could help speed up Arsenal’s pursuit of Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar.

Atletico will have the option to make a deal for Torreira permanent next summer for a fee of £22million.

Torreira fell out of favour under Mikel Arteta in the second half of last season.

The Uruguay international was a favourite with Arsenal supporters following his arrival in 2018 but failed to kick on from his promising first campaign at the club.

And Charles Watts of Goal claims Torreira said goodbye to his team-mates at the London Colney training ground on Friday.

The 24-year-old is set to fly to Madrid in the next 24 hours to undergo a medical and complete his move to the Wanda Metropolitano.

Arsenal wanted to include Torreira in a potential swap with Atletico for Thomas Partey.

However, the La Liga club are refusing to sell Partey for anything less than his £45m release clause.

Arsenal’s top target before Monday’s deadline is Lyon star Aouar.

The Gunners have been attempting to raise cash and make room in their squad by moving on the likes of Torreira.

Sead Kolasinac is also reportedly close to leaving the club to join Bayer Leverkusen.

Arsenal are attempting to reduce Lyon’s asking price for Aouar, which was initially set at £54m earlier this summer.

Arteta was asked about the potential of signing Aouar at his pre-match press conference ahead of the visit of Sheffield United on Sunday.

But he refused to be drawn on any specific names he is targeting.

Arteta said: “Well, I am very confident in what we are trying to do internally.

“[I am getting] clarity and support from everybody at the club to try and improve the team if we can.

“But most importantly as well, to get the right balance in the squad, for now and the way we want to evolve the squad in the future.

“We are all very much aligned but I’m afraid that I cannot give you any updates or news.”
