Arsenal have reportedly made a bid for Brazilian youngster Danilo as they look to fill the gap left behind by Thomas Partey. The midfielder will be unavailable for around a month after travelling to Cameroon to take part in the African Cup of Nations.

Arsenal are said to have lodged a £16.5million (€20m) bid for Palmeiras’ impressive midfielder Danilo.

The 20-year-old played a key role in helping Palestra win back-to-back Copa Libertadores titles last season.

And despite having a good relationship with manager Abel Ferreira and the board, he is now being linked with a move to Europe.

R7 in Brazil claim that the Gunners have made an offer of an initial £16.5m, with a further £4m in performance-based add-ons.

Palmeiras are not thought to be interested in selling the player before the start of their season, having tied him down to a deal that runs until 2025.

So it is likely to take a very tempting offer from the Gunners to prise Danilo away from the São Paulo side.

R7 report that Danilo has ‘received a proposal’ from Arsenal for a move in January, as well as the bid.

Of course, Arsenal have delved into the Brazilian market before, snapping up Gabriel Martinelli from second tier side Ituano in 2019 for £6m.

With Arsenal looking short in midfield, it raised the question of whether Jack Wilshere could be re-signed.

The 30-year-old has been training with the first-team since October to build his fitness back up.

Arteta has ruled out offering the ex-England international a playing contract.

He told reporters: “I think I was very clear with the situation with Jack and the role he was going to have; we will continue in the same way.”

However, Arteta has confirmed Arsenal are actively looking to strengthen their ranks this month if a suitable opportunity arises.

“With the amount of things and the way we want to evolve the squad, we have to maximize every window in many different ways,” Arteta explained.

“We are alert. Edu and his team are working very hard because we know exactly what we need to do.

“Whether we can accomplish that in January or in the summer is a different question related to other stuff, but we are there.

“If it is the right player and we can afford it and we can do what we want to do, we will discuss it and make the best possible decision. We are open.”
