Arsenal fans have delighted in Mikel Arteta showing off his footballing abilities in their side’s 2-0 defeat of Newcastle on Sunday.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored an acrobatic goal on his first start since contracting malaria to secure the three points for the Gunners.
Mohamed Elneny had opened the scoring in the first half after capitalising on Aubameyang’s mis-timed shot, his first Premier League goal since moving to the Emirates Stadium.
While there was plenty to celebrate about those two goals, it was an incident involving boss Arteta that thrilled Arsenal fans.
As the game entered the 87 th minute, a Newcastle defender sent a long ball forward, looking for the run of Callum Wilson.
Gunners keeper Mat Ryan came out of his box to clear the ball, sending it high down the left-hand touchline towards the dugouts at St James’ Park.
Arteta was standing on the edge of his area and dropped back a few paces to perfectly control the ball with his right foot and cushion it up to a Newcastle player to take a throw-in.
The Spaniard had a 17-year senior career, playing for the likes of Rangers, Everton and Arsenal and he has clearly lost none of those skills.
Fans have now called for him to turn his contract into that of player-manager and start himself for the Gunners’ crucial Europa League semi-final second leg against Villarreal.
“Comfortably the third best midfielder at the club. Arguably second because defensively he was miles better than Xhaka even at the end of his career when he could barely turn,” one fan wrote on Redditt.
“Highlight of the game to be honest,” another added.

“Get him to sign a player-manager contract and sub him in at centre midfield,” a third fan added.
Some though took a tongue-in-cheek line and criticised Arteta for giving possession back to the Magpies so quickly.
“Practically gifted possession back to Newcastle. Better game management next time boss,” one supporter wrote.
