According to AS, Azpilicueta’s ability to play centre-back as well as on the right also make him a versatile option and he is highly rated by Simeone.

Like many Blues defenders, the 32-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and from this month is free to negotiate with teams outside of the Premier League over a free transfer this summer.

However, Atletico’s needs would be immediate, and the Spanish side may need to make a bid for the defender to prize him away from Stamford Bridge.

The report believes Azpilicueta is unlikely to extend his Chelsea stay but that Barcelona are also keeping a close eye on his availability.

Simeone is understood to prefer Trippier staying until the end of the season but Atletico have seen an opportunity to cash in on a player who is could leave for free next summer.

‘He is an extraordinary player, ‘ added Simeone. He is someone who has given us so much.’

Asked why he could be leaving in the middle of a tough season when the club are not blessed with reliable defenders he added: ‘there are millions of reasons you can think of’.
