Atletico Madrid may repeat Luis Suarez tactic due to Barcelona financial woes

The possibility of a summer clear-out at Barcelona could work in favour of Spanish champions Atletico Madrid as they pursue a deal for left-back Jordi Alba this summer.

Diego Simeone benefited after tempting Luis Suarez from Catalonia last year, with the Uruguayan playing a leading hand in reclaiming La Liga in his first term at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Los Rojiblancos will reportedly hope to repeat the same trick with Spain international Alba, who has spent the past nine years of his career at the Camp Nou.

AS reported re-elected Barca president Joan Laporta is open to selling a number of stars in order to balance the books, with Alba said to be one who could be on his way out.

Moreover, it’s understood the 32-year-old already has an offer to join Atletico, who are believed to be targeting an upgrade at left-back in the coming months.

Suarez, 34, scored 21 goals in 32 league outings as Atletico topped the rankings in La Liga, while former employers Barcelona settled for third under Ronald Koeman.

That return suggested the Blaugrana perhaps should have done more to keep the forward for at least one more season, and Barca may be reluctant to sell to their rivals again.

Belgium international Yannick Carrasco enjoyed success as a converted wing-back down Atleti’s left flank this season, with Brazilian Renan Lodi rotating into the team when needed.

Former Valencia star Alba has another three years remaining on his current contract at the Camp Nou, but Barcelona’s eagerness to reshape the squad this summer could lower his price.

Barca are understood to be feeling the pressure under a mountain of debt, leading to speculation that Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho could be part of a proposed summer fire sale.

United States right-back Sergino Dest was fielded on the opposite side of defence when Alba was sidelined through injury at times this season.

Junior Firpo is also understood to be one of the players who could be sold to raise funds, although the left-back’s departure is far less likely if Alba leaves for Madrid.
