  • Barcelona’s first-team stars are taking pay cuts amid the club’s financial woes
  • Gerard Pique slashed his wages two weeks ago and two more have followed suit
  • The club confirmed Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba have accepted salary cuts
  • That means Sergio Aguero can finally be registered to play in LaLiga this season

Barcelona stalwarts Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba have agreed to pay cuts to their contracts this season which has allowed the club to finally register summer signing Sergio Aguero.

The Catalan club lost icon Lionel Messi because they couldn’t give him a new contract that would fit into LaLiga’s strict financial fair play regulations – leaving him to make the shock switch to PSG earlier this month.

Two weeks ago, Gerard Pique accepted a pay cut in order for Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia to be registered and now Aguero – who joined on a free transfer from Manchester City – will be able to play in LaLiga following the international break.

The salary reductions mean summer signing Sergio Aguero can finally be registered to play

A club statement on Tuesday afternoon read: ‘The salary reductions for Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, two of the four first team captains, signed this Tuesday have allowed FC Barcelona to achieve two objectives: the registration of Sergio Aguero with the Spanish Football League (LFP) and to extend the club’s limit with regards to financial fair play regulations.

‘Sergio and Jordi Alba have agreed to changes in the financial terms of their contracts which included a wage reduction for this season and the deferment of payments for the remaining years.

‘The gesture from the two players comes after the agreement recently signed by Gerard Pique which also allowed his team mates Memphis, Eric Garcia and Rey Manaj to be registered with the league.

‘As such, FC Barcelona has completed the registration of its players with the LFP.’

Alba has previously spoken about his willingness to accept a salary reduction in order to stay at the Nou Camp for the rest of his career.

‘When the club talks with me, I am willing,’ he said. ‘I’m from here, spending my whole life in Barcelona. That my commitment is questioned hurts me a lot.

‘The lies annoy me, they tire me. I can put up with a lot, but I suffer for my family and the things they have to hear.’

Barcelona’s debt is more than £1billion and president Joan Laporta blamed the previous administration of Josep Bartomeu for leaving the club in the dire situation that led to Messi’s departure.

The first-team beat Getafe 2-1 on Sunday in LaLiga, with summer signing Depay scoring the winner.
