Barcelona are close to reaching a contract extension agreement with 17-year-old wonderkid Gavi, according to reports.

Having only one year left on his current deal, the midfielder was initially linked with a summer switch to Liverpool, who reportedly considered triggering his £43 million release clause last month.

However, it seems Gavi is now set to remain at the Camp Nou next campaign, following fruitful talks between Barcelona and the Spaniard’s agent.

Gavi’s representative – former Barcelona midfielder Ivan de la Pena – held ‘positive talks’ in a meeting with the Spanish giants on Thursday morning, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Spanish newspaper claimed that the agent went to Seville earlier this week to meet with Gavi and his family to discuss details of the latest contract offer made by Barcelona.

Following Thursday’s meeting, both parties were satisfied that the deal was edging closer to an agreement, although not yet fully finalised.

Liverpool have been busy capturing club-record signing Darwin Nunez from Benfica for an all-encompassing fee in the region of £85 million.

The Reds look set to miss out on Gavi at least in the short-term and will need to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements should the teenager pen a new deal in Spain.

Gavi made 47 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona last season, scoring two and assisting six.

Moreover, he already has 10 internationals caps under his belt, featuring in all four of Spain’s Nations League matches in June.
