Barcelona and Manchester City are locked in tense negotiations over teenage defender Eric Garcia, with the Premier League club steadfast with their £13.5million valuation.

19-year-old centre-back Garcia started his career with Barcelona before joining City in 2017 but he has made just 26 first-team appearances since.

Barcelona failed to bring in a new central defender in the summer despite their failure to win any silverware last season highlighting the desperate need for one.

Garcia, who started his career with Barcelona, is valued at about £13.5million by City

They have identified Garcia as their No 1 target and he would join Clement Lenglet, Gerard Pique and Ronald Araujo as options in that position with Samuel Umtiti expected to depart in the January window.

According to Spanish newspaper Diario Sport, Barcelona and City have renewed negotiations in recent days but there’s been no budging from the £13.5m valuation.

Unless there is a breakthrough soon, Garcia will remain at the Etihad Stadium until the summer when his contract expires.

Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman was unable to sign a new central defender in the summer

There have also been reports that Real Madrid may rival Barcelona for Garcia’s signature, seeing him as a long-term replacement for Sergio Ramos.

Garcia, for his part, has made it clear he has no intention of renewing his City contract and wishes to return to Barcelona, the city of his birth.

City are aware of this but rate Garcia highly and would rather lose him for nothing next summer than sell him below market value in January. The City hierarchy are still putting significant pressure on him to sign a new deal.
