Barcelona eye Newcastle star and Man Utd could help Catalan club land £60m deal

Newcastle ace Bruno Guimaraes is wanted by Barcelona as the fallen European giants make plans for yet another overhaul.

The Spanish outfit crashed out at the group stages of the Champions League last week, further compounding their desperate financial plight. But, as ever, they are already plotting a serious shuffling of their pack – with Toon favourite Guimaraes, 25 next month, very much on on the radar.

That in turn throws the future of Dutch midfielder Frenkie De Jong at the Nou Camp into major doubt once more.

Barca believe that De Jong is still a top target for Manchester United – despite a proposed £80m switch there in the last window collapsing over the deferred wages they owed him post-COVID.

His sale would definitely raise the sort of money required to land £60m-rated Guimaraes – just as long as they can persuade Newcastle to do business.

That, of course, will not be easy. The Premier League outfit are now owned by the Saudis and have limitless cash reserves – unlike the Catalans.

A new, improved deal for their Brazilian superstar, who cost £35m from Lyon only last January, is already on the table at St James Park but so so far he has yet to put pen to paper.

As long as that is the case, Barcelona will be optimistic they have a chance of tempting the South American midfielder, expected to be a major part of Brazil’s World Cup bid in Qatar, to head to Spain next summer.

Toon chief Eddie Howe, though, will be equally desperate to keep hold of Guimaraes, whose form this season is proving integral to the club’s push for Europe.
