Bayern Munich and Olympique Lyonnais proved to be the best club teams in the world over the 2019-20 season, and now that dominance has been reflected in the 2020 edition of the Goal 50.
Between them, Bayern and Lyon boast 15 players on this year’s list. The German giant headlines the men’s list with seven players, while eight members of Lyon’s unstoppable women’s squad have been named to Goal’s annual ranking.
On the men’s side, Robert Lewandowski claimed the top spot after a stellar campaign in which Bayern’s Polish striker scored 55 goals in 47 games across all competitions as the Bavarians stormed their way to a treble (Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League). Lewandowski was joined by teammates Alphonso Davies, Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich, Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer among the top 25 men on the list, while former Bayern midfielder Thiago Alcantara — who is now employed by Liverpool — was named at No. 12.
The women’s winner didn’t come from Lyon despite the French club’s heavy presence among the top 25. Instead, it was former Wolfsburg star Pernille Harder who took the top spot, following a campaign in which the 27 year-old led the team to a German league and cup double. Harder joined Chelsea in the offseason in the biggest transfer in women’s soccer history, but her impact with Wolfsburg is what placed her atop the women’s ranking.
While most of the players ranked in the Goal 50 ply their trade in Europe, there’s a significant North American presence in this year’s edition. USWNT stars Crystal Dunn, Julie Ertz and Abby Dahlkemper feature in the women’s ranking alongside Brazilian NWSL standout Debinha. On the men’s side, Bayern phenom Davies is the only North American player to make the cut, as the young Canadian was named the 20th best player by Goal’s editorial staff.
