Brazil axe Arsenal trio for international games – and Gunners fans are delighted

Arsenal trio Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhaes have all been left out of Brazil’s latest squad ahead of the friendlies against Ghana and Tunisia.

All three have played integral parts in the Gunners’ early success this season as they sit first in the Premier League after six matches. So it would have come as a shock to some that Brazil manager Tite did not select any of them for the final friendly matches before the World Cup.

Yet despite the initial disappointment, the Arsenal faithful can feel reassured knowing their crucial stars will be given some much-needed rest ahead of a busy fixture schedule. And some have taken to Twitter to voice that belief.

One Arsenal fan wrote: “Fantastic news. Their position in the World Cup is assured. They can rest for a few weeks. Ready to smash the spuds.”

Another tweeted: “Good for us, and for Brazil. Let them be ready for the World Cup.”

A third added: “Let them rest. They have a PL to win.”

Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu are understood to have voiced to Tite the need to rest the players. While Jesus and Gabriel are still expected to be included in Brazil's squad for the World Cup in November, Martinelli’s place is less certain due to the sheer number of options in his position.

Explaining his decision not to select Jesus, the Brazil manager said: “Gabriel Jesus, specifically, is having a great time and in contention. Absolutely, yes.

"These call-ups serve as opportunities for others. As well as others in this same context. Regarding the number of attackers. Football is creation and scoring, and defensive solidity. If you run away from these characteristics, you will lose.

"This balance point is very difficult in a team and we are looking for it. This number of attackers will not be determined. Athletes’ versatility is an important part.”
