Cadiz defender Carlos Akapo has shared a gruesome picture of his foot which showed the nasty injuries he sustained in a challenge with Real Madrid star Eden Hazard on Sunday.
With La Liga already won, Hazard was given his first run-out in three months by Real manager Carlo Ancelotti. The former Chelsea star came off the bench in the 1-1 draw against relegation-threatened Cadiz, but his appearance did not go to plan.
In the 74th minute Hazard lunged for the ball as Cadiz defender Akapo attempted to fire off a shot towards goal. The Belgian went over the top of the ball, studs up, and caught Akapo with a nasty challenge which forced him to limp off with the help of the Cadiz medical staff, while Hazard picked up a booking.
The 29-year-old looked in a great deal of pain at the time – and the pictures he’s since shared on social media explain why. Akapo posted a picture of his right foot, which is badly bruised and has a deep cut on the top from Hazard’s studs.
As acaption on Twitterhe added emojis of a yellow card and a sideways smile, suggesting the punishment Hazard received was very lenient. He then posted a picture of his foot on X-ray and added: “Thanks to the people who have been concerned, I have the 2nd and 3rd toes broken. Now it's time to recover and die next weekend.”
Cadiz manager Sergio Gonzalez said Akapo had a bad injury, but stopped short of criticising the decision to only show Hazard a yellow card. “He has a strong injury, the action is ugly, I don't know if it's red or not,” he said. Cadiz will be desperate to have Akapo back for the weekend, given their precarious situation in La Liga.
The draw against a much-changed Real side was not enough to haul them out of trouble, with Mallorca’s 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano leaving Cadiz in the relegation zone on goal difference, in 18th place heading into the final round of fixtures. Akapo’s side will travel to play bottom club Alaves on Sunday, while Mallorca take on mid-table Osasuna and Granada, who are a point better off, host Espanyol.
Hazard has endured a miserable season with Real Madrid. The 31-year-old has made just 22 appearances in all competitions, returning just one goal and one assist in that time. He is under contract until June 2024 with Real, who paid an initial £89million for his signature from Chelsea in 2019.
