Carragher admits concerns over five Liverpool players amid recent struggles

Jamie Carragher has picked out five Liverpool players who are struggling amid the club's dismal recent run.

The reigning champions fell to their first league defeat at Anfield in almost four years on Thursday as Ashley Barnes' penalty sealed a 1-0 win for visitors Burnley.

It means Liverpool have not won any of their last five Premier League fixtures, or scored a single goal in their previous four.

Jurgen Klopp's side are now in danger of falling behind in the title race unless they can address their slump quickly.

But Carragher is concerned that five key stars are not anywhere near the usual standards they set last season.

He told Sky Sports: "I can’t remember a time when this Liverpool team have been so out of form.

"The front three and the full-backs – all five of them – don’t feel anywhere near their best.

"It’s not just that they’re not scoring, it’s the general play as well. You saw with [Mohamed] Salah, three or four times he just ran into defenders.

"Liverpool supporters will be massively frustrated. This team has brought the title back but the best Liverpool teams have brought that standard year in year out."

It's been an extremely interesting start to the season for Jurgen Klopp's men.

They got their title defence off to a shaky start as they edged out a seven-goal thriller against Leeds, before going on to conceded seven in a hammering by Aston Villa.

Virgil van Dijk's season was ended by injury in the 2-2 draw at Everton, leaving the title favourites looking far less secure at the back – especially with Alisson's injury worries too.

But there's no slowing down in what is going to be a busy campaign – with Klopp ensuring his men continue at full pace as they bid for more title glory.

Salah and Roberto Firmino both started on the bench but were soon called into action early in the second half to try and grab Liverpool a goal.

But neither they, nor strike partner Sadio Mane, were able to provide the spark to set them on their way, with Barnes' spot kick eventually proving the difference.

They were not helped by the displays of the normally industrious Andy Robertson or Trent Alexander-Arnold.

It was a particular off-night for the latter, who has been well off the pace this season and produced another lacklustre performance against Burnley.

Carragher added: "Jurgen Klopp has defended the players but at this moment it looks like the title is slipping away, it will be really difficult [to retain it].

"They’ve been so poor, it’s hard to believe what has happened to Liverpool. So many players out of form at the same time."
