During their time together at Real Madrid, Casillas and Mourinho endured a difficult relationship, with the long-serving shot-stopper being dropped.

However, Mourinho was quick to get in contact during a very difficult period for Casillas.

‘A lot of people don’t know it but Jose Mourinho was one of the first people to call about me, to call me to find out how I was,’ Casillas told ESPN.

Casillas was subsequently seen hugging Mourinho at the FIFA congress and admitted that the event was an emotional occasion for him.

He said: ‘I saw people I had not seen for a long time, it makes you appreciate the little things in life,’ he said. ‘You live more from day to day, you stop just being in your own little world.

‘I was very lucky, other people don’t have that.

‘I felt that I was definitely going to die that day, and the circumstances forced me to reconsider everything. I’m a privileged person. If I can continue to play football, I will do that.’

Casillas announced his retirement from playing in August.

He spent the vast majority of his career at Real Madrid, with whom he won three Champions Leagues and five La Liga titles, while he also won the league with Porto.

On the international stage Casillas won the World Cup with Spain in 2010 and the European Championship in 2008 and 2012.
