Chelsea begin 2021 summer transfer plans as Lampard and Granovskaia eye two deals

Chelsea have begun their plans for the 2021 summer transfer window, and have two positions in mind that they want to improve, according to reports. Frank Lampard and transfer guru Marina Granovskaia apparently want a new centre-back and centre-midfielder.

Chelsea had a fantastic summer transfer window, forking out nearly £250million on new recruits.

Having gone through their transfer ban, the club spent the money they received from the 2019 sale of Eden Hazard, and then some, in order to improve Lampard’s side.

Kai Havertz was the most expensive addition, with the German wonderkid costing a whopping £72m from Bayer Leverkusen.

The entire fee could rise to £90m, however, once the Blues have paid out installments and add-ons.

Hakim Ziyech cost them £37.5m, while Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell were bought for £53m and £50m respectively.

Lampard also solved his goalkeeper conundrum by bringing Edouard Mendy to the club from Lille in a £22m deal.

However, there are still positions that club chiefs aren’t exactly sold on.

According to Football London, via The Star, Chelsea officials are planning to bring a new centre-back and a new defensive midfielder next summer.

Chelsea signed two new centre-backs this summer, with Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr both arriving on free transfers.

Silva, 36, left Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his contract last season and inked a one-year deal, while Sarr, 21, came in from OGC Nice and was loaned to Porto.

Lampard still doesn’t seem happy with his defence, however, and has seemingly given up on Antonio Rudiger. The German defender was offered out to clubs in the summer as the club tried to find the 27-year-old a new home.

West Ham star Declan Rice was believed to be one of Lampard’s top targets going into the window, but a bid was halted after the Hammers demanded £73m for his services.

However, they could reignite their interest in a year’s time when they have a fresh transfer budget at their disposal.

Rice, who came through the Chelsea academy, is said to be open to the move, and his future could be determined by West Ham’s status in the Premier League – with David Moyes’ side currently one of the clubs tipped to fight against relegation.

Lampard is said to want to play Rice, 21, as the leader of a three-man centre-back line-up.

The other position Rice could play, however, is the other priority Chelsea are said to have for next year.

The Blues apparently wanted to bring in a new defensive midfielder this summer, and were even claimed to be listening to offers for N’Golo Kante.

Jorginho was also touted for a potential move to Arsenal, but the Gunners ended up triggering Thomas Partey’s release clause instead.

Chelsea have also been linked with a move for Boubakary Soumare in the past, and it is believed they could make formal enquiries next summer.

The 21-year-old has been impressive at Lille, and will only have 12 months remaining on his contract when the next summer window opens, and therefore could be bought for a discounted fee.
