Chelsea boss Frank Lampard plans squad talks after Jorginho misses another penalty

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has revealed he will have discussions with the squad about who should be the club’s first-choice penalty taker. It comes after midfielder Jorginho missed his second spot kick of the season in Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Krasnodar in the Champions League.

Prior to the current campaign, Jorginho had only ever missed one penalty in his entire career but his miss against Krasnodar means he has now failed to find the back of the net twice already this season.

His other miss from the spot came against Liverpool in the Premier League and it was a costly one, with the Reds going on to win the game 2-0.

Against Krasnodar, Jorginho rattled the post after Werner was brought down in the area and he had already been taken off when the Blues were given a second penalty.

A shot from Christian Pulisic hit the arm of defender Alyaksandr Martynovich and this time Timo Werner made no mistake, dispatching the spot kick.

After the game, Lampard insisted he still has faith in Jorginho but did admit he will hold discussions with his players about who should take the penalties going forward.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Lampard said: “Jorginho has had an incredibly successful rate of scoring penalties in his career, particularly at Chelsea.

“My feeling is that when you take as many penalties as he does there can be periods when you can miss one or two. I’ve experienced that as a player.

“I’ve no problem at all with his style of taking them because of the success he has had and Timo Werner I know is very capable of taking penalties, as we saw.

“We have other players that can so I’ll talk with them afterwards to see how we move forward but we have good takers at the club.”

Hakim Ziyech started the game as he continues his return to full fitness after a knee injury kept him out at the start of the season.

The former Ajax man impressed in his first start for the Blues, netting his first goal for the club, and Lampard was pleased with his display.

“Hakim Ziyech was fit today, the first time he’s really been fit to start a game,” he added.”He has worked really hard to be fit and I was very keen to get his quality into the team.

“We saw that for the whole period he was on the pitch. He brought a lot of quality and calmness and got a well deserved goal.

“I thought his performance was very very good when you consider he hasn’t started a match since March when the Dutch league finished. So I have been very excited to get him on the pitch so it has been frustration for me and for him and us that his injury hasn’t allowed him to start.

“But what I have seen in training so far and what I knew we were signing as a player was a player with immense quality and personality to receive the ball, assists and find goals. We saw a lot of glimpses of that today.

“We brought him in to do a job and maybe people have forgotten a bit because we signed him in January and he missed the start of the season. Tonight, he certainly showed he is here.”
